Peltola Votes to Lower Energy Bills for Alaskans

Hands Off Our Home Appliances Act Passes U.S. House

WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Mary Sattler Peltola (AK-AL) voted to pass H.R. 6192, the Hands Off Our Home Appliances Act. The legislation would prevent the Department of Energy from establishing energy efficiency standards that raise costs for consumers.

“Alaskans can’t afford to be picky about their energy or appliances, especially when energy efficiency goes down in extreme cold temperatures,” said Rep. Peltola. “My personal energy bills can be over $1,000 a month – I can’t support policies that might increase costs for Alaska families.”

The Hands Off Our Home Appliances Act:

  • Authorizes the Secretary of Energy to amend or revoke a standard if it increases costs for consumers, does not result in significant energy or water savings, is not technologically feasible, or results in the unavailability of product
  • Protects affordability by requiring the DOE to consider the cost to low-income households and the full-life cycle cost of appliances when determining if the new standard is economically justified
