Representative Mary Sattler Peltola issues statement on Biden administration funding for Alaskan tribe relocation

Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Mary Sattler Peltola released the following statement on the news that the Biden administration will pay $50 million in relocation costs to Alaska Native tribes whose homes are threatened by climate change:

“The $50 million dedicated to the relocation of Newtok and Napakiak by the Biden Administration represent a critical investment. These two villages are existentially threatened by erosion and sit, like many Alaskan communities, on the front lines of the fight against climate change. By providing funds for their relocation, the administration is exemplifying their true commitment to adapting and combatting climate change.

I look forward to continued collaboration with the administration to ensure that Alaskan communities most impacted by climate change are provided the resources and assistance they need to protect themselves, adapt, and, if need be, relocate.”
